Canadian children's performer Raffi brings a gentle, tuneful, and--most importantly--relaxed air to his songs. Baby Beluga features four Raffi-penned originals, including the terrific title track, which begins with real whale sounds taken from underwater recordings. "Baby Beluga" is one of Raffi's best-known tunes and serves as the centerpiece of his 1984 video, A YOUNG CHILDREN'S CONCERT WITH RAFFI.
In addition to the Raffi compositions, there are a number of popular, traditional songs, such as "This Old Man," "Kumbaya," and "Oats and Beans and Barley," on Baby Beluga. All of the tracks on this recording are performed with his trademark affability. Raffi and his music exude an undeniable sweetness--think Andy Kaufman without the lingering menace. Those with kids will attest to the profound relief experienced when it's Raffi on the sound system of an extended car journey, rather than one of the numerous examples of cloying children's music that dominates the market.
